In 2 Samuel 6:5-7, we read —
“And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error, and he died there by the ark of God.”
Uzzah took upon himself to meddle with something holy, something inspired of the Lord. The consequences were disastrous. Today we are witness to another form of tampering, though not so overt.
Back on 8/31/2019 we did a post called ” Taking the Place of the Spirit of Truth”. In it, we talked about how some among us were placing our own interpretation right INSIDE the actual inspired quote! In other words, doing the work of the Spirit of Truth.
https://hearyetherod.wordpress.com/2019/08/31/taking-the-place-of-the-spirit-of-truth/
For example, a report from the leader of Salem DSDA organization, Don Adair, called “Seventh-Day Adventist Church is Not Babylon” is a correct report. The premise is made that the SDA church is not Babylon. However all through his report, we find his (insertions) as shown in the following —
He quotes Early Writings, p.40 —
“Then I was taken to a world which had seven moons. There I saw good old Enoch, who had been translated {type of the great multitude who will also be translated}. On his right arm he bore a glorious palm, and on each leaf was written ‘victory’. ”
In the red highlighted area Adair inserted his own interpretation of what the verse was saying. Although he is correct in this addition, the point is that inserting in the middle or anywhere in the body of the HOLY WORD is not something we should ever do!
Once we get into this habit of self-insertion it can be a slippery slope. For example, brother Don does it often in his reports (144,000 and those with them) and his following insertion “living or dead”, we believe is inserted because he is well known for his teaching that “more than” 144,000 will be sealed from the SDA church at Ezek. 9 judgment, and thus promotes his ideas into the inspired quote.
“Remember, too, that you [living Davidians} are candidates for the first fruits, to be either one with {living or dead} or one of the 144,000 {who never die}, that you are to be without guile in your mouths.” (Rev. 14:5).(1 TG, no. 4, p.27)
This of course underscores his well-known doctrinal teaching of “those with living” at Ezek. 9 from our SDA church. Recently we were doing our studies and we came across Adair’s Shepherd’s Rod series volume 2 book. It has the TG’s and some Charts.
On page 35 of his book, the TG volume 1, no.4 is discussed. But our eye caught something disturbing. It reads —
“Remember, too, that you are candidates for the first fruits, to be either one with or one of the 144,000, that you are to be without guile in your mouths (Rev. 14:5).” (1 TG, no. 4, p.27)
We ask ourselves, did brother Houteff underline the “with” in this statement? The original TG ,sure enough, is NOT underlined! Once again Adair set his hand to inspiration, an act we believe is of dire consequences as the type shows.
Further our Lord made it all too clear —
“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” (Rev. 22:18-19)
But Adair does it again on page 61 —
“Notwithstanding these ensamples , though, men still expect God to work in accordance with their judgment, and that is why sometimes He uses children in His work instead of wise and prudent men.” (1 TG, no. 7, p.7)
Then also we are all aware of this same practice engaged by the General Conference back in 1962 when it steered people to a deceptive explanation of what SOP was saying in the following inspired reference —
“Prophecy must be fulfilled. The Lord says: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.” Somebody is to come in the spirit and power of Elijah,[*SEE APPENDIX.] and when he appears, men may say: “You are too earnest, you do not interpret the Scriptures in the proper way. Let me tell you how to teach your message.” (TM, p.475)
Contrarily, the Lord’s PROPHETS do have this privilege, to add WITHIN the inspired quote, their thoughts, interpretations and guidance, as show here —
Isa. 3:13, 14 — “The Lord standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. The Lord will enter into judgment with the ancients of His people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.”
This scripture emphatically declares that the Lord is pleading while He stands to judge the people, showing that the Judgment of the Living begins after this announcement of it has sounded throughout Laodicea. The charge against the ancient and the princes (leaders and ministers) is that they have eaten up the vineyard, that they have consumed the entire income, and that they have robbed His people to enrich themselves.
It is a known fact that not only the tithe (the only lawful allowance for the ministry) but also the offerings (the portion for the poor) and all else are consumed by the ministry, and that they have turned even the Sabbath and the house of worship into institutions of money raising, using all kinds of means and devices in the name of religion by which to make the poor poorer and themselves richer.
Not I, but the Lord is the One Who says so. It is no exaggeration, therefore, to say that the house of God is become a house of merchandise, run by thieves, that the dwelling places of the ancients and the princes thereof are used as pack rat nests, and that the Sabbath day has been turned into a market day.” (1 TG, no.5, p.21)
“The name, Davidian, deriving from the name of the king of Ancient Israel, accrues to this Association by reason of its following aspects: First, it is dedicated to the work of announcing and bringing forth the restoration (as predicted in Hosea 1:11; 3:5) of David’s kingdom in antitype, upon the throne of which Christ, “the son of David,” is to sit.
Second, it purports itself to be the first of the first fruits of the living, the vanguard from among the present-day descendants of those Jews who composed the Early Christian Church. With the emergence of this vanguard and its army, the first fruits, from which are elected the 12,000 out of each of the twelve tribes of Jacob, “the 144,000” (Rev. 14:1; 7:2-8) who stand on Mount Zion with the Lamb (Rev. 14:1; 7:2-8), the reign of antitypical David begins.” (Leviticus of DSDA, p.3)
We who love the Truth take delight to read such insertions as we know they are INSPIRED interpretations, from which the Spirit of Truth is working!
The Lord sent us a clear unmistaken lesson on the proper channel of Inspiration–Zechariah 4, let’s adhere to it!
Another brother shows this wrong action in two examples as follows —
“The certainty that the souls cried from under the altar, the place from which God’s truth is dispensed, makes obvious that they were slain for their firmness in the Word of God, and that for their faithfulness they were given white robes —they were accounted worthy of eternity. That they were the martyrs of the preceding period, the period of the fourth seal, is clear from the fact that they were already dead when the fifth seal opened.
Moreover, an altar denotes renewal of faith, reformation [this does not happen in the Kingdom for S. D. A.’s]. That is what it meant to Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the instances they built their altars (Gen. 8:20; 12:8; 26:25; 35:14).”—Tract No. 15, pp. 52,53 [bracket added] (WhyPerish. org — “Going Eastward: A Study From Ezekiel 47” report, page 5)
“It is certain that if you are to escape alive from the vengeance of God, these facts you Elders [in the S. D.A. church] now dare not deny, neither dare you refuse to arise and as loud as you possibly can proclaim revival and reformation throughout the breadth and length of Laodicea.”—Jezreel Letter No. 3, p. 10. [bracket added] (WhyPerish. org — “Going Eastward: A Study From Ezekiel 47” report, page 6)
This brother clarifies that he has added his interpretations, but does that excuse it? Is this not guiding us on how to interpret the reference as he sees it, be it right or wrong? Did not Uzzah have good intentions, to protect the Lord’s Ark? Carelessness and pretentiousness!
Again, Inspiration is holy and deserves our total reverence, let us keep this in mind as we read, report and quote God’s words through His prophets.
“However when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, thatshall He speak: and he will shew you things to come.” (John 16:13)
Let us be clear, there is times we need to highlight certain parts of the message to bring out a point, such as red, green or yellow highlights. But to add written insertions in the inspired reference is altogether something different. By way of disclosure, in the past we ourselves have occasionally underlined certain areas of a reference which we are, in hindsight, remorseful. We are reviewing it and correcting it upon review of posts done in the past. If anyone should bring it to our attention, so we can correct it, we would be thankful.
As you might have surmised, we have had a rebuke from the Lord and this post is meant to relay what we now understand about it. Afterall we don’t want to be found accused of the following —
“I have been shown that the greatest reason why the people of God are now found in this state of spiritual blindness is that they will not receive correction. Many have despised the reproofs and warnings given them… Those who despise the warning will be left in blindness to become self-deceived.” (Testimonies, vol. 3, p.255, 257)
In closing , let us be very careful that we don’t “steady the ark” as did Uzzah did. Sure we can give our opinions and thoughts about any inspired reference, but to place our additions, our interpretations, inside the body of the written word — that is a BIG NO-NO or we may face the same fate as Uzzah.
“What a fearful responsibility rests upon those who carelessly handle the Word of God, who pose as soul guardians over the people!” (1 TG, no.18, p.17)
